ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound is a non invasive procedure that is used to help our vets to visualise and assess internal body structures. This has many applications in helping us to obtain information and diagnose many conditions including:

  • Gastrointestinal foreign bodies
  • Liver and kidney disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Assessment of the abdomen and chest cavities in trauma cases
  • Pregnancy diagnosis
  • Identifying tumours within the abdomen and assessing lymph nodes
  • Heart disease
  • Locating and guiding the removal of migrating foreign bodies (e.g. grass seeds)
  • Identifying musculoskeletal injuries
  • Guidance of minimally invasive sample collection

Ultrasound also helps us to perform ultrasound guided nerve blocks which allow us to perform accurate placement of local anaesthetic to block pain sensation prior to surgery.

At Ace Vet hospital we have two state of the art ultrasound machines that are in daily use, including the Mindray Resona 7 which was the first sold into veterinary practice. Dr Andrew has many years experience performing ultrasounds and has mentored Dr Callie through the completion of a Graduate Certificate in Small Animal Abdominal Ultrasound.
